Catholic Q&A
QUESTION
| Father, I wanted to know, if never having been married, I would have to give up the Eucharist if I married a divorced man. An annulment is out of the question for him, as he says that his marriage was a true marriage and that he loved her very much and he could not, in good conscience deny it's validity at one time. While I respect this decision, I am not sure I am willing to give up receiving Christ fully at Mass. |
ANSWER
| For a Catholic to marry a divorced person who has not received an annulment (which would show that there is no existing bond of marriage), the marriage would have to be a civil marriage or take place in a non-Catholic church and as such would not be recognized by the Catholic Church. A Catholic who does so would not be able to receive the Eucharist. However, before you make any decision on this relationship I advise you to talk to one of the priests or deacons of the parish about the specifics of your situation. |
