Real Service, Real People

Fr. Remo DiSalvatore, OFM Cap.
Pastor

Seminary: Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ.

Date of Ordination: May 17, 1997

Who influenced you to consider the vocation to the priesthood and, more specifically, to the Capuchin order? A lot of people but, specifically to the Capuchins, it was Fr. Jude Duffy, OFM Cap., who I met in Tampa while I was discerning my vocation.

What did you do before you became a Capuchin? I was a Sales Representative for a carpet manufacturer covering the state of Florida.

What would people be surprised to learn about you? I had a tryout as a goalie with the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League.

What are some of your hobbies? I like to work outside in the garden and go to the gym.

What are some of your favorite books/spiritual readings/magazines? Francis: The Journey and the Dream, by Murray Bodo, which is a book about the life of St. Francis. Also, Sports Illustrated.

Who is a hero to you? My mom is a hero to me because of the sacrifices that she has made for me in her lifetime and because of the example of her great faith, which has inspired me.

What have been some of the greatest joys for you as a Capuchin Priest? Sharing intimately in people’s lives, both the joys and the sorrows. Celebrating the Eucharist and hearing confessions and, through these, being able to see the grace of God at work in people’s lives. As a Capuchin, being present and giving Communion at the canonization of Padre Pio.

What are some ways that we can promote and support vocations to the priesthood and religious life? If you see someone who would make a good priest, brother, or sister, encourage them, especially those in your own family. Also, pray for vocations.

What advice would you give to a young man who is contemplating a vocation to the Capuchin life and/or the priesthood? Don’t be surprised or think “I am not worthy of such a call.” God has a history of choosing the most unlikely candidates to do his work. Just go for it!
