Room in the Inn

It is now time to begin our 17th season participating in the Room in the Inn ministry. This is an outreach program which provides overnight shelter and meals for the homeless community of Charlotte from December 1st through March 31st. We continue to partner with Newell Presbyterian Church, Advent Lutheran Church and Harrisburg United Methodist Church in this ministry. Each Monday night we provide this Corporal Work of Mercy for 14 men, women and children at Advent Lutheran Church. 


We have volunteer opportunities available for this season including:

  • Morning Driver for the HUMC Van: Dec 12, Jan 23
  • Providing Bag Lunches for 14: Jan 29
  • Providing Breakfast for 14: Jan 30, Feb 27
  • Providing Dinner for 20 to 25: Jan 8
  • Providing Pillow Treats for 14: Jan 8
  • PM Driver: Dec 25
  • One Sleepover Person: Dec 18, Jan 8, Jan 29

Room in the Inn will be collecting supplies that are needed during the coming season: Men’s white undershirts (especially XL, 2XL & 3XL), men’s boxers (all sizes) and Wal-Mart, Target or K-Mart gift cards (used for emergency re-supplies). Please place your supply donations in a bag with RITI on it and leave them in the Bridal Room after Mass, give to Deacon Joe or they can be dropped off at the church office.

Q. What does a volunteer do for the Ministry?
A. Volunteers can serve in several different capacities. Greeters are needed to set up the cots, linens, and tables for the guests. Greeters also welcome the guests and make them feel comfortable. Other volunteers prepare "Pillow Treats," while others prepare and serve meals. One person is needed to spend the night at Advent Lutheran. Drivers are needed to transport individuals to and from the Urban Ministry Center on Tryon. We also need people to help with clean-up on Tuesday morning.


Q. When does the Room in the Inn operate?
A. Room in the Inn operates during the months of December, January, February, and March.

Q. What nights does Room in the Inn operate?
A. The Room in the Inn program operates seven nights a week throughout Charlotte. St. Thomas Aquinas participates on Monday nights.

Q. What types of activities or needs are there?
A. People are needed to set up cots, make dinner, provide bag lunches, prepare lunches, assist with transportation and clean-up.


Q. What about clothing and other needs?
A. Space is limited for storage. There is usually a drive in early November for basic toiletries, socks, t-shirts, etc.
